Background
Global advancements in immunology have transformed modern healthcare, and major teaching hospitals in China's metropolis centers now operate at the cutting edge of this discipline. However, as a developing country, a significant disparity remains at the rural grassroots level. While immunological disorders affect rural populations just as frequently, many primary care physicians lack formal training and up-to-date knowledge in basic immunology. Bridging this knowledge gap through specialized education for primary care doctors is vital for improving early detection, standardized treatment, and overall healthcare equity in underserved communities.
To bridge the gap between advanced immunological science and primary healthcare, the Chinese Society for Immunology (CSI) hosted the 2026 Immunology Training Workshop for Primary Care Physicians in Linquan County, Anhui Province, from August 14 to 15.
The two-day initiative brought together leading immunologists and clinical experts from top medical centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Zhengzhou to deliver tailored medical education to primary care professionals from rural and county-level hospitals across the Dabie Mountains region.
Strengthening Primary Care Foundation
As part of CSI's commitment to medical outreach, Prof. Bo Huang, President of CSI, presented the Handbook of Basic Principles of Immunology to representatives from the Linquan County Hospital and nine local township health centers. Chiefly edited by prominent experts including Prof. Yan Shi, the practical handbook is specially designed to help primary care doctors master core immunological concepts relevant to daily clinical practice.
Bridging Basic Immunology and Clinical Practice
The workshop featured a comprehensive curriculum that translated complex foundational science into practical knowledge, spanning early clinical diagnosis, precise treatment, and regional healthcare network development:
• From Bench to Bedside: Prof. Bo Huang delivered a keynote lecture on Immunological Foundations of Autoimmune Diseases, demystifying basic concepts like innate and adaptive immunity. Prof. Huji Xu (Naval Medical University Changzheng Hospital) highlighted emerging trends in targeted biotherapy and cell therapy, while Prof. Yan Shi (Tsinghua University) and Prof. Guanxin Shen (Huazhong University of Science and Technology) dissected core immune mechanisms and therapeutic strategies.
• Focus on Common & Complex Conditions: Clinical experts shared real-world insights on prevalent autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Topics covered Sjögren’s syndrome (Prof. Guanmin Gao), Antiphospholipid syndrome (Prof. Guansheng Wang), Gout/Hyperuricemia management combining Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine (Prof. Hailong Wang), and organ protection strategies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) via B-cell targeted therapy (Prof. Qiubai Li).
• Case-Based Learning & Diagnostics: To hone primary care diagnostic skills, practical case studies were presented on Spondyloarthritis, complex neuro-immunological conditions, and misdiagnosed autoimmune presentations by clinical leaders from regional partner hospitals.
Empowering Regional Discipline Building
Beyond clinical training, the workshop extended into clinical research and discipline development. Prof. Chunli Mei from Wuhan Union Hospital introduced Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards in rheumatology. Panel discussions focused on leveraging GCP to elevate primary care standards, establishing chronic disease follow-up networks, and enhancing regional data sharing within hospital alliances.
By aligning cutting-edge science with grassroots needs, CSI continues to empower primary care clinicians, ensuring that advancements in immunology benefit patients in underserved regions.
Driven by a shared mission of community service and medical equity, this workshop successfully bridged high-level immunology expertise with primary care needs.
